SUV Plows Into South Bay Outdoor Dining Tent, 2 Seriously Hurt

Crash left nine people injured including the Driver. Two suffered life-threatening injuries.

SAN JOSE, CA — Two people suffered life-threatening injuries Sunday afternoon when an SUV crashed into an outdoor dining tent, the San Jose police said.

Nine people altogether were injured in the crash, including the driver of the 2000 Toyota 4-Runner, who accidentally accelerated into the crowd while trying to park at the Grand Century Plaza at Story and McLaughlin Roads in east San Jose, police said.

The injuries ranged from “major to minor" according to police.

John Brown, a 40-year-old San Mateo man who witnessed the crash, described a frantic scene in the aftermath of the accident with people heard screaming “get out of the way” before the sound of impact, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

“The noise when (the 4Runner) went through was like a huge grinding sound because of all the tables and everything caught underneath,” Brown told the Mercury News.

“It was so fast a lot of people didn’t react at first. I saw them go in the ambulances. Everyone was very shocked.”

The victims are three women and five men, in addition to the SUV's driver. All were taken to local hospitals for treatment, police said.
