📰 News we're reading

1. Malibu Driveway Collapses Into Sinkhole As High Surf Pounds Coast (patch.com) — Malibu residents are being reminded of the power of coastal erosion after pounding surf opened a massive sinkhole under a Sea Level Drive East beachfront driveway, rupturing a gas line but causing no injuries. Fire crews, gas company workers, and Malibu Building and Safety officials responded to secure utilities and assess the home's structural integrity as high surf and coastal flood advisories remained in effect.

2. Beach hazards statement affecting Los Angeles County beaches until early Friday (dailynews.com) — Malibu beaches are under a National Weather Service beach hazards statement through midnight Friday, with dangerous rip currents, strong surf, and possible beach erosion expected. Residents are urged to stay out of the water, avoid rocks and jetties, and protect flood‑prone property while impacts peak tonight and remain elevated into Thursday.

3. Orange County coastline faces possibility of significant erosion with El Niño looming (wishtv.com) — Malibu is among the Los Angeles County communities warning state officials about worsening coastal erosion, especially along Pacific Coast Highway, as powerful surf and an expected El Niño winter threaten shorelines. Recent damage and closures in Orange County highlight the kind of impacts Malibu residents could face if storms intensify and sea levels keep eating away at local beaches.

4. Los Angeles County sues State Farm over alleged mishandling of Palisades, Eaton Fire claims — The Malibu Times (malibutimes.com) — Los Angeles County has sued State Farm, accusing the insurer of delaying, denying, and underpaying claims from the 2025 Palisades and Eaton fires, including for Malibu homeowners. Officials say hundreds of complaints allege systemic underpayments and mishandled smoke-damage claims, while Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, who represents affected Malibu residents, is backing the push for what she calls justice for survivors.

5. On California's Central Coast, an Indoor-Outdoor Museum Connects Visitors With Centuries of Chumash Heritage (cntraveler.com subscription) — Malibu sits at the southern edge of the Chumash people's ancestral homeland, which now includes the new Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary along the Central Coast. A recently opened Santa Ynez Chumash Museum and Cultural Center invites visitors to explore Indigenous history, language, and cultural practices through immersive exhibits, classes, and youth programs.
