Business To Shutter After 30 Years In South Bay: ‘Remarkable Run’

"It's been a daily stop, a familiar face, friendly smile, and a steady presence in our community," a business association said.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — After 30 years of serving the community, a Manhattan Beach business is bidding farewell to the South Bay.

Current Events, a newsstand on Highland Avenue in downtown Manhattan Beach, “will close (its) doors at the end of this week,” the Downtown Manhattan Beach Business + Professional Association said in a Monday Instagram post.

“For three decades, Current Events has been so much more than a newsstand,” the association wrote. “It’s been a daily stop, a familiar face, friendly smile, and a steady presence in our community.”

The association commended the business on its "remarkable run.”

“From selling thousands upon thousands of lottery tickets, newspapers, and magazines, to helping locals with UPS drop-offs and mail services, Kay and Peter have truly been there for us — day in and day out — for decades," the association wrote.

The association went on to say the owners will be “deeply missed, but their impact on our community will always be felt.”

“Downtown Manhattan Beach won’t be quite the same without you,” the association said.

Others on Instagram echoed the sentiment.

"We loved Current Events," one user wrote. "Definitely an end of an era for all of us print magazine lovers."

"Another MB historical landmark gone ... we will miss you," another user wrote.

Despite the closure, the association encouraged visitors not to "fret."

"Another local favorite (Gum Tree) will be working their magic to refresh the space and move in soon," the association wrote.

The home and gift shop will transition to its new space, about a block from its current location on Manhattan Beach Boulevard, in early April, the owners said in an Instagram post earlier this month.
