UPDATED: LAX-Bound Lufthansa Jet Has Near-Miss with Drone

A drone passed within 200 feet of a passenger jet at 5,000 feet above Los Angeles.

A passenger jet headed into LAX narrowly avoided a run-in with a drone on its way into LAX this afternoon.

According to Federal Aviation Administration Spokesman Ian Gegor, "A Lufthansa A380 pilot reported that a drone passed approximately 200 feet over their aircraft while they were inbound to LAX Runway 24."

The near miss had happened at about 1:30 p.m. Friday at about 5,000 feet altitude, according to the FAA. Los Angeles Police were unable to identify the drone's operator.

In October, the Los Angeles City Council approved a law that makes it a crime for drone operators to interfere with police, fire and airport operations.

The city’s ordinance makes it unlawful to fly drones within a five-mile radius of an airport, limits drone use if it interferes with manned aircraft and requires that drones be flown within the operator’s line of sight.

The rules also prohibit using drones at night and flying them higher than 400 feet. Drones also cannot be flown closer than 25 feet from another person, except at takeoff and landing.
