Olympians Win Manhattan Beach Open Men's Title

This was the third time the 40-year-old Gibb has won the Manhattan Beach Open, all with different partners.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Olympians Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson won Sunday's men's final of the 57th annual Manhattan Beach Open while Emily Day and Brittany Hochevar were upset winners in the women's final.

Gibb and Patterson, who were seeded first, defeated third-seeded Tri Bourne and John Hyden, 17-21, 21-18, 16-14, to become the first back-to-back winners on the Association of Volleyball Professionals tour this year.

This was the third time the 40-year-old Gibb has won the Manhattan Beach Open, all with different partners, and the first victory for the 36-year-old Patterson.

Gibb, of Bountiful, Utah, and Patterson, of Newbury Park, advanced to the final when Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena, the other men's beach volleyball team who will represent the U.S. at next month's Summer Olympics, forfeited following a calf injury to Dalhausser during the first set.

Bourne and Hyden defeated Taylor and Trevor Crabb in the other semifinal, 23-21, 19-21, 15-10

In the women's final, Day and Hochevar, who were seeded sixth, upset the top-seeded duo of Lane Carico and Summer Ross 21-16, 19-21, 19-17, for their first AVP title together and first Manhattan Beach Open title for both players.

Day and Hochevar defeated the second-seeded team of Kim DiCello and Kendra VanZwieten, 21-15, 21-19, in the semifinals. Carico and Ross, defeated Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat, one of two teams that will represent the U.S. in women's beach volleyball in the Olympics, 21-15, 16-21, 15-11, in the other semifinal

The winning men's and women's teams both received $20,000 while the runners-up both received $15,000.
