Lifeguards Make 50 Ocean Rescues Between Playa del Rey and San Pedro

The South Battalion of the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Lifeguard Division had a busy day today as it conducted dozens of rescues between Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey and Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro.

The emergencies ranged from ocean rescues to bicycle crashes and a capsized personal watercraft as warm weather prompted thousands of people to flock to county beaches and coastal waters.

Over 50 ocean rescues were made, according to the Lifeguard Division, which received assistance at various times from the Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Torrance fire departments.

"A fresh run of northwest windswell that filled into our west-facing beaches through the day caused in an increase in rip currents," according to a division statement.

Cooler temperatures are expected through mid-week, but another period of hot weather is expected again next weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Those taking to the shore are advised to swim and surf in front of a lifeguard tower and to check in with a lifeguard before entering the water to get information on the safest areas in which to swim.
