Police Kill Venice Transient

A man believed to be homeless was fatally shot by Los Angeles police officers in Venice, police said today.

The shooting took place in the 80 block of Windward Avenue near the Venice Boardwalk about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, LAPD Commander Andrew Smith said.

According to Smith, officers were responding to a 911 call about a transient who was harassing people in that area. When officers arrived they found the man having some kind of argument with a bar employee. Officers approached the man and an altercation ensued, leading to an officer-involved- shooting.

The suspect, who was 25-years-old, was transported to a hospital for treatment of his wounds but later died, said LAPD spokeswoman Liliana Preciado. His name was withheld pending family notification.

It’s unknown whether the deceased man was armed. But LAPD Officer Meghan Aguilar told reporters at the scene, no weapon was found in the area.

It’s not known what led up to the use of deadly force by the LAPD officers, or whether these officers had been wearing any kind of body cameras. But Smith said officers are trying to collect surveillance video from cameras in nearby businesses.
