More High Surf, Dangerous Rip Currents Prompt Beach Warnings

More high surf is expected along Southern California’s coast today along with what forecasters are calling very strong and highly dangerous rip currents, and gusty high winds will lash the Antelope Valley, creating challenging driving conditions through Wednesday night.

A high surf advisory issued by the National Weather Service will be in force until 11 p.m. Tuesday along the Los Angeles and Orange county coasts. Surf as high as 8 feet is possible in Los Angeles County from Long Beach Harbor to Huntington Beach, according to an NWS statement.

“In addition, south-facing harbors and bays across the Channel Islands, including Avalon, Port San Luis, San Simeon and Cayucos could see significant currents capable of dislodging moored vessels and docks,” it said.

The NWS also urged members of the public to not climb on jetties “as large waves can sweep you off the rocks easily.” And for those who plan to go into the water, “swim near a lifeguard or when in doubt, stay out,”

The NWS said the high surf is the result of a long-period swell produced by a storm in the southern hemisphere.

In the Antelope Valley, a wind advisory was scheduled to be in effect from noon today until 9 p.m. Wednesday. Expected in the Antelope Valley are southwest winds of between 15 and 25 miles per hour with 35-mph gusts, increasing in the afternoon to 20 to 30 mph with 50-mph gusts. The winds will be strongest in the Western foothills, according to the NWS.

Blowing sand and dust could cause visibility on Antelope Valley roads to fall to zero, the NWS warned. The Antelope Valley (14) Freeway and Pearblossom (138) Highway could prove particularly challenging.

The NWS forecasts highs today of 60 on Mount Wilson; 63 in San Clemente; 64 in Laguna Beach; 65 in Avalon, Newport Beach and at LAX; 67 in San Gabriel, Irvine and Mission Viejo; 68 in Lon Beach; 69 in Fullerton and Anaheim; 70 in downtown L.A., Burbank and Yorba Linda; 71 in Pasadena and Woodland Hills; and 75 in Palmdale and Lancaster. Wednesday’s temperatures may be marginally lower in some communities.
