Coroner IDs Man Killed In Ravine Crash in Contra Costa Co.

The passenger was treated for injuries at John Muir. The accident is under investigation.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA – A man who died when his car veered off a Contra Costa County highway and went down a ravine early Saturday morning has been identified as 54-year-old Gilbert Wagner, according to the Contra Costa County coroner's office.

The crash was first reported around 1:06 a.m. near the town of Crockett on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 near Cummings Skyway, CHP officials said.

Wagner, an Antioch resident, was driving a vehicle when it went off the roadway and down a ravine, landing in thick shrubbery, according to the CHP.

When emergency crews arrived, they were able to get Wagner and a passenger out of the vehicle. Wagner was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger, a 52-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries. She was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, CHP officials said.

Investigators believed the crash occurred several hours before it was initially reported. They're continuing to investigate whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, according to the CHP.
