Man Swept To Sea In Half Moon Bay Possibly From Brisbane

The 25-year-old's family reported him missing Monday night after he did not return from trip to beach. His Jeep was also found nearby.

HALF MOON BAY, CA - San Mateo County sheriff’s officials are continuing a search today for a man who was last seen Monday entering the water at a Half Moon Bay beach where a missing man’s parked vehicle was found nearby.

Around 1:30 p.m. Monday, a witness reported seeing a man entering the water near Dunes Beach located on Young Avenue, according to the sheriff’s office. The witness reported that the person had been swept out to sea by ocean currents and never came out of the water, sheriff’s spokesman Sal Zuno said.

The report prompted an extensive air and sea search involving a helicopter, two lifeboats and various law enforcement units.

The search continued until about 7 p.m., according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Around 11 p.m., the sheriff’s office then received a call reporting that Michael Dwyer, 25, of Brisbane, had not returned home after a visit to the beach.

California State Parks officials located Dwyer’s 2004 Jeep Wrangler parked near Half Moon Bay State Beach’s Venice Beach, sheriff’s officials said. Sheriff’s officials cannot confirm the man seen entering the water is Dwyer and are continuing to search on land for the vanished swimmer, according to Zuno.
