Dear Millbrae Residents,

I am sorry to announce that, yesterday, San Mateo County was added to the State of California’s COVID-19 monitoring list, due to an increase in the rate of COVID-19 cases in the county. Information could change daily, please continue to monitor the City’s website and social media for updates.

As of July 29, 2020, San Mateo County Health has reported 5,398 positive cases of COVID-19. San Mateo County’s COVID-19 case rate yesterday, based on a 14-day rolling average, was 110.4 positive cases per 100,000 of population. The State’s threshold for inclusion on the monitoring list is a case rate of 100.

The three-day clock began yesterday, which means additional restrictions will take effect at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2020. County officials believe that the local case rate will not decrease by Saturday and urge businesses and the community to prepare now for the additional restrictions.

If San Mateo County remains on the monitoring list for three consecutive days, the State would require the closing of:

• Gyms and fitness centers

• Places of worship and cultural ceremonies, like weddings and funerals

• Offices for non-critical infrastructure sectors

• Personal care services, like nail salons and body waxing

• Hair salons and barbershops

• Shopping malls

San Mateo County Health is working closely with the State and continues to partner with hospitals about their capacity and surge plans. The State has not offered guidelines for when restrictions might be lifted, but additional information from the State can be found at https://covid19.ca.gov/roadmap-counties/.

County residents are urged to strictly enforce preventative measures such as wearing face coverings, washing hands frequently, and avoiding gatherings with people outside of their immediate family.

If San Mateo County stays on the State’s monitoring list, many more local businesses will be required to close. I, and everyone on the Millbrae City Council, ask you to please follow social distancing and COVID-19 preventative measures. Your efforts up to this point have been commendable but more must be done.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Together, we will save lives and beat this.

Sincerely,

Reuben D. Holober

Mayor, City of Millbrae
