San Mateo County 101 Express Lanes Construction Update: Feb. 23
Future construction activities for the next few weeks will include continuing vegetation removal activities, installing erosion control.

Project construction from Whipple Avenue to I-380 in San Mateo County is underway! Caltrans is constructing express lanes on U.S. 101 from the San Mateo County/Santa Clara County line to I-380 in South San Francisco. Construction is expected to occur between 2019 and 2022.

North of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from Whipple Avenue (in Redwood City) to I-380 (in South San Francisco) will include removing vegetation, installing a Smart Traffic System of changeable message signs placed in the construction zone that shows real-time traffic conditions, installing environmentally-sensitive area fencing, and temporary freeway striping. This work will occur on the freeway lanes, shoulders, and ramps.
Freeway Lane Closures: This week, nightly freeway lane closures will occur on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from 10:00 PM – 5:30 AM, Sunday through Thursday night. Expect delays below 15 minutes from 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM.

Freeway Ramp Closures: Temporary, nightly ramp closures will occur in/near Redwood City, San Carlos, Belmont, San Mateo, Foster City, Burlingame, Millbrae, San Bruno, and South San Francisco. Ramp closures could occur on both the northbound and southbound directions of the freeway. However, consecutive interchanges for northbound and southbound ramps will not be closed at the same time.
Ramp closures will:
• Be displayed on changeable message signs in the construction zone
• Take place at night
• Last three to eight hours
• Reopen by 6:00 AM daily
• Have detour signs posted
Short-Term nighttime ramp closures are possible this week at the following locations (listed from south to north). Check signs for exact closure times and locations.
• Eastbound/Westbound Whipple Avenue On/Off Ramp
• Southbound Brittan Avenue On Ramp
• Northbound/Southbound Holly Street Off Ramp
• Southbound Harbor Boulevard On Ramp
• Southbound Ralston Avenue On/Off Ramp
• Eastbound/Westbound Hillsdale Boulevard On Ramp
• U.S. 101/Route 92 Connector Ramp
• Eastbound/Westbound 3rd/4th Avenue On/Off Ramp
• Southbound Poplar Avenue On/Off Ramp
• Eastbound/Westbound Millbrae Avenue On/Off Ramp
• Northbound Millbrae Avenue Off Ramp
• Northbound San Francisco Airport Off Ramp
South of Whipple Ave: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from San Antonio Road (in Palo Alto) to Whipple Avenue (in Redwood City) will include minor construction activities to connect to existing electrical connections and install landscape mulching. This will include work on the freeway shoulders and ramps. Delays are not anticipated for this work.
Upcoming Construction: Future construction activities for the next few weeks will include continuing vegetation removal activities, installing erosion control protection, installing environmentally-sensitive area fencing, installing concrete barriers next to the travel lanes, temporary freeway striping, setting up a Smart Traffic System, installing construction/detour signs north of Whipple Avenue, and installing temporary loop detectors. In addition, permanent striping, and erosion control will be finishing south of Whipple Ave.
