'Relay for Life' Coming to Millbrae's Central Park

The 24-hour relay is in support of cancer survivors and victims.

The following was submitted for publication on behalf of the city of Millbrae:

On Saturday, July 23, more than 200 people will take part in the American Cancer Society’s 6th Annual Millbrae Relay for Life. Starting at 10 a.m. at Central Park, participants will walk or run in team relays for 24 hours to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer. Each team will have a representative on the course at all times during the 24-hour period.

β€œAlmost all of us have someone in our lives who has been devastated by the effects of cancer,” said Anne Oliva, Mayor of the City of Millbrae. β€œMore than a fun community event, the Relay for Life gives us all the opportunity to reflect on our lives and the moments we have with those we love."

The highlight of the event will take place at 9 p.m. during the Luminaria Ceremony where decorated bags placed around the course will be lighted to honor cancer survivors and victims. Before the event begins, the Millbrae Lions Club will be hosting a $5 All-You-Can-Eat pancake breakfast at the race site from 8 a.m. until 12 noon.

β€œWhen my son was two years old, he was diagnosed with stage-three melanoma. It’s very rare in children, but it meant he had to go through surgery and chemotherapy treatment,” said Karen Bettucchi, the Millbrae Relay for Life organizer. β€œHe is a survivor today because of the research and care he received at UCSF and the Melanoma Clinic. The American Cancer Society provides a lot of support to the doctors, patients and their families along the entire journey. I want to make sure others have the success we had by supporting the Cancer Society.”
