Traffic Advisory: Treasure Island Ramp Reopens

Dump truck sludge spilled deemed not toxic by authorities. Truck driver still on the lam. [Breaking]

BAY AREA, CA – California Highway Patrol officials said a possible hazardous materials spill this morning on an exit ramp to San Francisco's Treasure Island from the eastbound lanes of the Bay Bridge turned out to be benign.

A mixture the officials called mud and sludge was reported to the CHP at 4:45 a.m. and the ramp was closed until about 2 p.m. as the material was tested and Caltrans crews cleaned up.

A dump truck spilled the material, CHP Officer Vu Williams said.

Investigators thought the mud and sludge could have been tainted with a chemical, but a specialist tested the material and found that it was not toxic.

CHP officials are still looking for the driver or the company responsible since the driver left the scene. Charges could be filed for failing to secure a load and leaving the scene, Williams said.

Eastbound drivers who wanted to exit at Treasure Island had to go farther east to the toll plaza and turn around and exit from the bridge's westbound lanes, Williams said.
