1. 'Big Impact In Small Packages': Mill Valley Remembers Beloved Mother, Cashier (patch.com) — Mill Valley residents and city leaders came together at a recent council meeting to honor Mary Murphy, a beloved Safeway cashier who worked in town for more than three decades and considered Mill Valley her second home. Speakers shared memories of her impact on local shoppers and used the moment to push for continued investment in pedestrian safety projects that protect people walking in and around the community.
2. Southern Marin (CA) Fire Board Selects Next Chief (fireengineering.com) — Mill Valley's fire and emergency medical services will soon be led by incoming Southern Marin Fire Protection District Chief Heather Marques, who starts October 13. She'll oversee 90 employees serving Mill Valley and nearby communities, amid some union concerns about the hiring process and her past legal dispute, which she says will not affect her work locally.
3. Tobacco Sales Face Final Countdown in Mill Valley (patch.com) — Mill Valley's City Council has advanced an ordinance that would end all commercial sales and deliveries of tobacco and vaping products within city limits starting February 1, 2027, pending a final vote. Leaders say the move responds to high youth nicotine use and builds on earlier flavored-tobacco restrictions, while city staff project only a small tax hit but some retailers fear major revenue losses.
4. 'Ripples' celebrates artists bringing new perspectives to UC Law SF campus - UC Law San Francisco (Formerly UC Hastings) (uclawsf.edu) — Mill Valley artist Janet Yano is among Northern California creators featured in UC Law San Francisco's Ripples art exhibit, where she presents a Monopoly-inspired piece about World War II incarceration of Japanese people. The campus-wide show highlights 81 works that bring fresh perspectives to students' daily environment while celebrating regional artists and the role of art in civic and educational life.
