Another San Quentin Inmate Dies Amid Coronavirus Outbreak
Nineteen inmates at San Quentin have died from COVID-19, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

SAN QUENTIN, CA — Another death row inmate at San Quentin State Prison has died from what appears to be complications related to the coronavirus, state corrections officials announced.
Johnny Avila Jr., 62, died Sunday at an outside hospital, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The coroner will determine his exact cause of death, officials said.
Avila, who had been on death row since 1995, was sentenced in 1996 in Fresno County for two counts of first-degree murder.

Avila is the latest inmate at San Quentin whose death has been linked to COVID-19. Across California, 47 state prison inmates with confirmed cases of COVID-19 have died, including 19 at San Quentin, according to the CDCR website that tracks cases and deaths.

Out of 7,656 COVID-19 cases confirmed so far among state prison inmates, 2,146 have been at San Quentin. There are now 716 people on California's death row.
