MILL VALLEY, CA — Mill Valley’s 1936 City Hall and Firehouse have been formally listed on the National Register of Historic Places, city staff announced at the Monday City Council meeting.

“[It’s] an important milestone for the city and a proud moment for our community,” said Patrick Kelly, Mill Valley Planning and Building director.

The designation recognizes the building as a nationally significant architectural and civic landmark, constructed during the Great Depression with funding from the federal Works Progress Administration.

“[The project] reflects Mill Valley's historic commitment to public life, good design and community identity,” Kelly said.

He added that the structure also symbolizes the city’s recovery after the 1929 Mill Valley fire. The listing is the culmination of years of work tied to the Mill Valley 2040 General Plan, the city’s historic context statement and historic resources inventory adopted in 2021, and partnerships around Mill Valley’s 125th anniversary.
