Enhancing Safety In Mill Valley: Eagle Scout Project

Scout David Gilmore has impressive goals for emergency response in the Mill Valley area. See how you can help ...

MILL VALLEY, CA – Local scout David Gilmore, also a Community Emergency Response Team member, zeroed in on a way to aid Mill Valley residents during emergencies, has turned his idea into his Eagle Scout project and is seeking community support.

The Life Scout from Mill Valley Troop 1 is working to convert the Mill Valley CERT trailer, currently used to store emergency supplies and equipment, into a Mobile Incident Command Center - "ready to go at a moment's notice."

"With the recent wildfires all over our state, I'm very concerned about how a disaster would impact our community and would like us to be better prepared," David said on his fundraising site. "My Eagle project will improve our readiness to manage an emergency situation when the need arises."

David's plans included adding power, interior and exterior lighting, a chart table with maps, a hand-radio charging station, plus stocking the unit with first-aid equipment and fresh supplies.

"I'm reaching out to Mill Valley residents and businesses, friends and family for the funds needed to purchase the materials I need to make it happen," he said on the GoFundMe site. "This Mobile Incident Command Center will be available to CERT, Mill Valley Fire Department and Mill Valley Police Department to serve our community. Please HELP ME reach my goal."

To date, David has raised $3,008 toward his $5,000 goal. Donations go through the Mill Valley Volunteer Fire Department and are tax deductible.

The Mill Valley Police Officers Association recently stepped up for his cause, along with Malugani Tire Center on Miller Avenue with a donation of a new set of tires and the Rotary Club of Mill Valley with a cash contribution.

"With the funds I've raised so far, I have been able to build and install a desk, corner cabinet with shelves and a control panel, purchase and install exterior and interior lighting and replace all four tires," David said. "Some of the things I still have to add include deep-cycle AGM batteries to power all of the equipment, waterproof storage bins and a solar panel."
