SAUSALITO, CA — Police arrested a homeless man last week in connection with a robbery and other crimes stemming from an incident at a Sausalito clothing store.

Sausalito police were dispatched to the 20 block of Princess Street around 11:30 a.m. Oct. 3 after receiving a report about an assault at a store.

Responding officers learned a man, later identified as Jonathan Whyte, 35, attempted to purchase a belt at the store. When his credit card was declined, he went behind the counter, took an employee's cellphone and started to run away, according to the Sausalito Police Department.

The employee and Whyte struggled for the cellphone, and the employee was ultimately able to get her phone back, police said. Whyte then ran outside, took a rental bicycle from a neighboring business and fled the area.

Officers searched the area but were unable to find Whyte.

Police were later dispatched around 3:40 p.m. to a report of a disturbance in the 2400 block of Bridgeway that involved a man matching Whyte's description. After searching the area, officers found Whyte in the 2100 block of Marinship Way.

Police said Whyte attempted to flee from officers on the stolen bicycle, but he was taken into custody following a brief struggle. Whyte, a transient who is on probation out of San Francisco for felony burglary, was arrested and booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of robbery, petty theft and resisting or obstructing officers.
