San Quentin​ Correctional Officer​ Attacked By Inmate

SAN QUENTIN, CA – A San Quentin State Prison correctional officer was injured in an alleged attack by an inmate on Monday, officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said today.

The officer was allegedly attacked at 12:25 p.m. as he was escorting 24-year-old inmate Jesus Pina back to his cell from a medical appointment.

Correctional officials alleged Pina struck the officer multiple times in the face, which bruised the officer and fractured his orbital socket. The officer was taken to an outside hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

The officer used force to try to stop the attack. Pina allegedly grabbed the officer and tried to pull him into his cell, but the officer escaped Pina's grasp.

The officer secured the cell and activated an alarm. Pina suffered scratches and bruising. He was cared for in the prison's triage unit and put in an administrative segregation unit, corrections officials said.

Pina arrived at San Quentin State Prison from Santa Clara County on May 16.
