UPDATE: Aerosol Deodorant Explosive Device Blamed for Explosion Behind Mill Valley Elementary School

MILL VALLEY, CA – The Mill Valley Police Department determined an aerosol deodorant explosive device may have caused a small explosion behind a Mill Valley elementary school Saturday night. The detonation, police said, occurred north of Edna Maguire School at a baseball field known as Alto Field.

“It is believed an aerosol deodorant canister was set on fire, causing it to explode, as demonstrated on numerous online videos,” police said in a press release.

Police officials said officers initially responded to multiple reports of a loud explosion heard around 10:15 p.m. near Edna Maguire Elementary School at 80 Lomita Drive.

At the time, officers were unable to locate the source of the explosion due to conflicting reports from callers, the police said.

Officers again responded to the school around 9:45 a.m. on Sunday after a caller said they believed they had found remnants of the explosion. In a press release on Monday, police said further investigation revealed the remnants of an aerosol deodorant explosive.

There was no property damage and no injuries were reported, according to police.

“Possessing or detonating any explosive device, whether homemade, experimental or commercially produced, is extremely dangerous and highly illegal,” police said in the release. “Anyone participating in this behavior could easily become injured or cause an injury to another person.”

The Mill Valley Police Department is still investigating the incident. Anyone who may have witnessed the explosion is asked to contact Mill Valley police at (415) 389-4100.
