Muir Fire Scorches 58 Acres, Shuts Down Highway 1 In West Marin

The rapidly-spreading blaze broke out near Slide Ranch between Stinson Beach and Muir Beach, according to the Marin County Fire Department.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — A rapidly-spreading wildfire sparked late Thursday morning near Slide Ranch, shutting down Highway 1 and sending smoke over West Marin.

The blaze, called the Muir Fire, broke out between Stinson Beach and Muir Beach, according to the Marin County Fire Department. The fire was first reported at 10:45 a.m.

Shortly after 11 a.m., fire officials said the blaze had scorched 4 to 5 acres and was moving toward the ocean. The flames spread 50 acres by 12:35 p.m.

About 165 firefighters were battling the fire. By 3:40 p.m., crews stopped forward progress of the of the 58-acre fire, which was 20 percent contained.

No structures were threatened and no evacuation orders were issued. However, as a precaution, staff and animals evacuated from Slide Ranch.

The fire forced the closure of Highway 1 between Stinson and Muir beaches. Shoreline/Panoramic in Stinson and Frank's Valley Road were also closed.

Authorities asked the public to avoid the area.
