SAUSALITO, CA – A 49-year-old woman failed to stop her speeding car at a red light before she crashed into a light pole in Sausalito and died late Monday night, a police lieutenant said.
A police officer was almost struck by the 1999 Honda Accord around 11:40 p.m. as he attempted to turn north onto Bridgeway from Nevada Street, Sausalito police Lt. Bill Fraass said.
The Honda driver went north on Bridgeway as the officer tried to catch up to it, but then it then struck a light pole and a banner pole in the 3000 block of Bridgeway, Fraass said.

"We're not sure the woman knew there was a police officer behind her. She did not take evasive action," Fraass said this afternoon.
The investigation of the crash closed the 3000 block of Bridgeway until around 9:50 a.m. today. The county sheriff's office and the Mill Valley Police Department assisted in the investigation.
The Sausalito Department of Public Works inspected the light and banner poles and determined they did not present an immediate hazard, police said.
