2-Alarm San Jose Duplex Fire Displaces More Than A Dozen

SAN JOSE - A two-alarm duplex fire displaced more than a dozen people in San Jose just north of Interstate Highway 680 Monday afternoon, a fire department spokesman said.

Crews responded to a report of smoke from the rear of a duplex in the 600 block of South Sunset Avenue around 2:30 p.m., Fire Capt. Christopher Salcido said.

Arriving crews found everyone inside had already evacuated and heavy black smoke was coming from the rear of a duplex.

A second alarm was called for but quickly canceled because firefighters had limited access to bring in large equipment, Salcido said.

The fire was under control at about 3:10p.m.

The American Red Cross was called to help seven children and six adults displaced by the blaze.

Neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution but weren't damaged in the fire, according to Salcido.

The fire did a considerable amount of damage to the rear of the home, according to authorities.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
