BASEBALL RANKINGS: Harbor and Milpitas Make Some Noise

Trojans and Pirates on the rise; Los Altos, Homestead and Palo Alto all in mix for De Anza tournament title; Soquel and Aptos jockey for position in SCCAL.

Patch unveiled its Silicon Valley high school baseball rankings last month. The top-15 weekly rankings are drawn from all schools that fall under the Silicon Valley Patch cluster

The Silicon Valley sports cluster includes 12 different cities: Milpitas, Campbell, Los Gatos, Palo Alto, Cupertino, Los Altos, Mountain View, Scotts Valley, Santa Cruz, Capitola-Soquel, Watsonville and Gilroy.

The schools that are eligible to be ranked are: Milpitas, Del Mar, Westmont, Leigh, Branham, Prospect, Los Gatos, Palo Alto, Gunn, Cupertino, Monta Vista, Homestead, Lynbrook, Los Altos, Pinewood, Mountain View, St. Francis-Mountain View, Scotts Valley, Santa Cruz, Harbor, Pacific Collegiate, Soquel, Aptos, Watsonville, St. Francis-Watsonville, Pajaro Valley, Monte Vista Christian, Gilroy and Christopher High.

Records are based on reported games played through Sunday, May 1.

1. St. Francis 21-4, 11-1 WCAL (Last week: 1) – Back home after last week’s tough test in Southern California, the Lancers got back to form with a lopsided win over San Benito in Mountain View.

2. Palo Alto 20-7, 11-3 De Anza (2) – Scorching hot Vikings have now won nine straight games heading into De Anza league tournament. Another tango with Los Altos High comes up first today in Palo Alto.

3. Los Altos 16-9, 10-4 De Anza (3) – A split with Homestead puts Eagles into third place tie heading into De Anza league tournament. Los Altos squares off with Palo Alto today in the first of a three-game series against the Vikings. The winner of the series will play the winner of Wilcox-Homestead for the SCVAL De Anza tournament title next week.

4. Homestead 17-9-1, 10-4 De Anza (4) – Mustangs go 3-1 in busy week, grabbing wins against Los Altos and Monta Vista. Stocked with some top flight pitching, the Mustangs won’t be an easy out once the playoffs get going. Homestead opens up a three-game series on the road today at Wilcox.

5. Los Gatos 16-9-2, 7-7 De Anza (5) – A gritty 5-4 win over first place Wilcox halted five-game slide for ‘Cats. The victory also showcased just how dangerous this Los Gatos squad can be on any given day at the yard. Play Cupertino in De Anza playoffs today at 3:30 in Los Gatos.

6.  Leigh 14-6-1, 13-2 Santa Teresa (6) – Pioneer tops Leigh 10-3 in non-league meeting last week. Santa Teresa play resumes for Longhorns with games against Silver Creek, Prospect and Piedmont Hills this week.

7. Soquel 14-6-1, 7-1 SCCAL (7) – Knights have won three straight, but meeting with Aptos on Friday could determine eventual SCCAL champion.

8.  Aptos 14-8, 7-2 SCCAL (9) – Biggest week of the season is here for the Mariners. Rematch with Harbor is today before showdown with Soquel on Friday.

9. Milpitas 14-6-1, 8-3 El Camino (12) – Trojans brought out the big sticks during an impressive three-game winning streak last week. Scoring 32 runs in three games, Milpitas pounded Monta Vista 14-4 then nabbed two more wins in the Salinas Easter Tournament.

10. Westmont 11-11, 8-8 Mt. Hamilton (8) – Warriors drop tight ones to Soquel and Sobrato. Back to .500 in league, tough tests against Willow Glen and Pioneer come up next on the docket.

11. Del Mar 14-6-1, 10-4-1 Santa Teresa (11) – Dons offense exploded for 36 runs in three games last week, highlighted by back-to-back lopsided wins at home during which Del Mar scored 15 and 14 runs respectively.

12.  Monta Vista 12-10, 8-3 El Camino (10) – Four straight losses have the Matadors sliding at the wrong time of the year. However, they still sit only one game back of first place Santa Clara High in SCVAL El Camino race.

13. Harbor 12-8, 5-2 SCCAL (14)- Pirates ambushed Aptos to the tune of 11 runs during an 11-3 victory at home last week. Won’t be any surprises when teams meet again today in Aptos.

14. Gilroy 13-11, 8-7 TCAL (13) – Mustangs resume TCAL play today against No. Salinas after week off.

15. Monte Vista Christian 13-9, 11-2 MBL (15)- Mustangs go 1-3 in Salinas Easter Tournament. Play at undefeated Monterey High on Wednesday.
