Female, 24, Arrested In Connection With Milpitas Hit-and-Run

The woman allegedly hit a bicyclist and a Golfland fence and building on April 12.

Milpitas police have arrested a San Jose woman in connection with a hit and run that injured a bicyclist earlier this month.

Marlene Melchor Cortes, 24, was arrested Friday on suspicion of felony hit and run and booked into Santa Clara County Jail in connection with the April 12 collision, police said Thursday.

Cortes allegedly struck a 30-year-old Milpitas man on a bicycle just after 4:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of Jacklin Road, as she was exiting northbound Interstate Highway 680, according to police.

The bicyclist was standing at the northeast corner of the intersection when the red 2012 Nissan Sentra Cortes was driving struck him as it exited the freeway, according to police.

The Nissan then rolled across the sidewalk, crashed into a fence outside the Golfland miniature golf park at 1199 Jacklin Road, drove across the parking lot and crashed into a building at the park, police said.

Golfland employees who witnessed the incident told police that a man in a second car removed the woman who had been driving the Nissan, placed her into his car, then drove away, police said after the incident.

The second car was described as a silver or gray Honda. The bicyclist was at first thought to have suffered major injuries in the crash, but actually had only minor injuries and was later released from the hospital.

Members of the public who witnessed the collision are asked to contact Milpitas police at (408) 586-2400 or to leave an anonymous tip at (408) 586-2500.
