Two Local Swimmers Compete in Junior Olympics

Mark Tran and Roland Chin, who swim for the Parks and Recreation Department's 'Tidal Waves' team, qualified for and competed in the Junior Olympics recently.

The staff of the Milpitas Parks and Recreation Department had a big reason to celebrate recently when two members from the department's swim team qualified for and competed in the Junior Olympics.

Mark Tran and Roland Chin, two members of the City's "Tidal Waves" team, scored high in recent qualifying matches that earned them spots in the Junior Olympics' 14 and Under swimming competition. Mark and Roland are both 12 years old.

"Mark and Roland have been working hard all year long," said Jaime Chew of the Parks and Recreation Department, who oversees the Milpitas Tidal Waves program.

Mark placed eighth out of 28 swimmers in the 500-meter championship finals, and eighth out of 17 swimmers in the 100-meter butterfly championship finals. He was also named a consolation finalist in the 100-meter freestyle competition.

Chew said Roland performed admirably in the 200-meter breast stroke, the 100-meter individual medley, and the 100-meter butterfly.

Chew said the entire Milpitas Tidal Waves team looks forward to next year's season.
