Hello Monrovians,

Find out what's happening in Monroviafor free with the latest updates from Patch.

Since 2016, the City of Monrovia has contracted with MAX Aquatics to operate aquatics programs at the Monrovia High School pool. MAX Aquatics provides organized swim programs in numerous pools across the region. Their programs involve competition swimming, swim lessons and much more.  Their participants include Monrovians but also residents from communities all around the area. MAX Aquatics strictly follows USA Swimming protocols, which requires all coaches to pass criminal background checks, pre-employment screening, complete required Athlete Protection Training, and are certified for CPR, First Aid and Safety.

Last night at 7:12 p.m., I received a Nixle alert from the Arcadia Police Department regarding an arrest made. An individual employed as a coach by MAX Aquatics was arrested for violations of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, lewd and lascivious acts involving children, and other sex crimes. The Arcadia Police Department would like to know if there are additional victims. If you have any information regarding this ongoing investigation, or know someone who may have been a victim, please contact the Arcadia Police Department at (626) 574-5160, case number 2103509. At this time, we are obtaining more information.

Last night the City of Monrovia, in consultation with the Superintendent of the Monrovia Unified School District, immediately suspended all MAX Aquatics programming in Monrovia until further notice. As requested by the Arcadia Police Department, we all want to determine if there are other victims. For parents, athletes and kids who have participated in MAX Aquatics programs…please speak to your children, friends and team mates. If there are other victims we can provide them the support and help they need, and assist the Arcadia Police Department with their investigation. You may also contact your Monrovia Police Department at (626) 256-8000 or may report it to us online.

This morning, my heart hurts to share this recent incident. There is also so much to be thankful and grateful for. Last week was such an incredible weekend in Old Town Monrovia! My family and I got to spend it with the entire community at the Old Town Derby and Car Show, supporting all the children participating in the race. While browsing the Street Rods Forever Car Show, I bumped into neighbors and friends while looking at my favorite car, a 1968 Ford Mustang California Special. This fall, we'll have many more events in Monrovia which you can see in the new Monrovia Today. Please mark your calendar for future events!

Sincerely,
Dylan

Monrovia City Council Repeals Urgency Ordinance No. 2020-05U

On September 7, 2021, the Monrovia City Council adopted Urgency Ordinance No. 2020-08U. Urgency Ordinance No. 2021-08U repeals the emergency moratorium on the eviction of commercial tenants for non-payment of rent due to COVID-19 financial hardships and "no-fault" commercial evictions. This action affects only the commercial eviction moratorium and does not change the residential eviction moratorium.

In March and April of 2020, in conjunction with other state, County and local emergency actions, the City Council recognized the potential threat to public health and safety that could occur if residential and commercial tenants were evicted during the pandemic as a result of financial hardships associated with COVID-19. The City Council adopted urgency ordinances to impose moratoria on such evictions.

Approximately 17 months later, it has become apparent that a local moratorium on commercial evictions may no longer be necessary to protect public health and safety. City staff and Councilmembers have heard from local business owners, property owners, and a representative of the Chamber of Commerce that, in most cases, impacted commercial tenants and landlords in the City have been able to work out payment arrangements or deferrals. More important, on September 1, 2020, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors amended the County’s commercial eviction moratorium to make it the baseline protection for unincorporated territory and incorporated cities in the County. The County’s protections extend to businesses with fewer than 100 employees, and not to multi-national or publicly traded corporations.

Water Conservation is a Way of Life

Water Conservation is a primary focus for Californians due to the extreme heat and dry conditions.  Historically, summer creates the potential for higher water use. As the climate continues be warm, we must be aware of our water usage.  As the State has been urged to reduce water use by 15 percent, let us please be mindful of our water usage while we are at home.

American Water Use at Home - How Many Gallons do We Use?

Recent studies of how Americans use water throughout their home shows that, for most people, indoor water use is highest in the bathroom, followed by the laundry room. Leaks are, perhaps, the most surprising use of water on this list - they amount to 18 gallons of water per households per day lost to leaky toilets, appliances and faucets.
