Hello Monrovians,
Find out what's happening in Monroviafor free with the latest updates from Patch.
As you may have noticed, the wildfires in the Central Valley are producing substantial amounts of smoke. Due to the impacts from the heavy smoke, the South Coast Air Quality Management District released a special Air Quality Advisory for Los Angeles County, Riverside County, and San Bernardino County. If you smell smoke due to the wildfires, here are ways to limit your exposure:
- Remain indoors with windows and doors closed or seek alternate shelter;
- Avoid vigorous physical activity;
- Run your air conditioner if you have one. Make sure it has a clean filter and that it is recirculating the indoor air to prevent bringing additional smoke inside;
- Create a clean air space in your home by using a portable air cleaner instead of or in addition to your air conditioner. Use in one or more rooms with both the doors and windows closed;
- Avoid using a whole-house fan or a swamp cooler with an outside air intake;
- Avoid using indoor or outdoor wood-burning appliances, including fireplaces and candles.
Sincerely,
Dylan

National Preparedness Month | Week 4
It is important to include children and grandchildren in preparedness activities. Participating in the process creates more confident children in an emergency and knowing that the child in your life is prepared can ease some of your stress as well.
Here are a few things to help children prepare:
- Have children assist in building the family's Stay Box, Go Bag, and school emergency kit.
- Talk about the different types of disasters and what they would need to do in each case depending on where they are.
- Make sure they understand their school’s process for disasters and reuniting them with you.
- Discuss what they should do if they are at a friend or family member’s house.
Families are encouraged to enroll in a LISTOS class. LISTOS is a whole family preparedness program available in both English and Spanish through Monrovia Fire & Rescue. For more information email monroviaLISTOS@ci.monrovia.ca.us.

Flying A Gasoline Station
Have No Fear…the missing gasoline pumps will soon re-Appear!
As many of you recall, the Planning Commission approved the adaptive reuse of the former Flying A Gasoline Station located at 721 South Shamrock Avenue in February 2020. The project involves the conversion of the building into an artisan workshop with incidental retail and a live/work space. It also included several restoration and rehabilitation improvements to the building’s exterior.
If you pass by the property, you will see that the much needed improvements are underway. The gasoline pumps have been missing for a while, but that is because they are currently being restored back to their original glory. Soon new you will see the installation of new flat work and concrete pedestals for the restored pumps.
For more information about this project, please feel free to contact the Planning Division at planning@ci.monrovia.ca.us.
One West Nile Virus Positive Mosquito Sample in Monrovia
West Nile virus is endemic to Los Angeles County. This means it is found naturally in our city environments. During warmer weather, the virus activity increases, which increases the chance for our traps to catch mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus and any other viruses that can be a public health threat.
Through a random collection of 10-50 mosquitoes from a trap, the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District detected one new case of West Nile virus in Monrovia.
Tip 'n Toss, Show them who's boss! - Mosquitoes can complete their life cycle from egg to adult in a week, so eliminate stagnant water weekly in and around the home. Don't forget to keep your pool clean and maintained!
Repel, Don't Swell - Apply repellent to exposed skin to stop mosquito bites. Use Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (or PMD), which is EPA-registered and CDC-recommended. Other effective repellents are Picaridin, DEET and IR3535.

Water Conservation is a Way of Life
Water Conservation is a primary focus for Californians due to the extreme heat and dry conditions. Historically, summer creates the potential for higher water use. As the climate continues be warm, we must be aware of our water usage. As the State has been urged to reduce water use by 15 percent, let us please be mindful of our water usage while we are at home.
In partnership with the Metropolitan Water District (MWD), we're proud to offer residential and commercial rebates on indoor and outdoor devices as well as turf replacement through their SoCalWater$mart Program. In addition, the City adds supplemental funds to these rebates. Residents and business owners can apply for these rebates directly through the SoCalWater$mart website and receive rebate checks that include both the MWD and City contributions.
Before purchasing, check www.socalwatersmart.com for qualifying devices and application process. Some rebates require pre-approval.
