📰 News we're reading

1. Newsom signs safety protections laws after Boyle Heights warehouse fire (newsbreak.com) — Montebello is specifically named among the communities scarred by June's Lineage warehouse fire, and new state laws just signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom aim to prevent a repeat. The measures boost fines for large facilities that endanger neighbors and require cold-storage operators in the Boyle Heights area, and later statewide, to maintain contingency funds to support residents after disasters.

2. Fred Robledo makes his SGV football league predictions … (sgvtribune.com) — Montebello High's football team is picked as the favorite in the new Alliance League, with its tough nonleague schedule and big win over El Monte cited as proof it's battle-tested. A detailed rundown of San Gabriel Valley and Whittier-area leagues explains who's expected to contend for playoff spots and which matchups could decide league titles in the coming weeks.

3. Newsom signs LA lawmaker's bill targeting organized metal theft (theeastsiderla.com) — Montebello residents are now covered by a new state law cracking down on organized copper and metal theft from public infrastructure, signed Wednesday by Gov. Gavin Newsom. Authored by Assemblymember Mark González, whose district includes Montebello, the measure creates tougher misdemeanor and felony penalties for repeat thieves targeting streetlights, telecom lines, and other critical systems that cities are spending millions to repair.

4. 3 Californians sue ICE officers hours after Newsom signs bill greenlighting lawsuits (sfchronicle.com) — A Montebello family's junk car business is at the center of a new lawsuit after a U.S. citizen says ICE agents trespassed, tackled him, and detained him for four days despite his protests. His case, along with two others in Southern California, is now among the first to invoke California's new No Kings Act, which lets residents sue federal officers for alleged civil rights violations.
