Glendale Schools Face Fiscal Crisis

The district expects a weak budget in the next three years, forcing staffing cuts and larger class sizes.

Glendale Unified School District announced that area schools are facing fiscal crisis.

A weak budget may mean cutting personnel and increasing class sizes next school year, Eva Lueck, the district's chief business and financial officer, told The Glendale News-Press.

The district did not receive the $150 million over the last five years that it expected, Lueck told the newspaper. This prompted $30 million in cuts. Secretaries, counselors and clerical employees were let go, including the district's own spokesman.

A new round of cuts could force early retirement plans or layoffs for about 75 teachers, The News-Press reported. California education officials also gave GUSD permission to shorten the school year to save money.
