What's Next for Chamlian's Gymnasium
The school must obtain a parking reduction permit before design plans can go before the city.
Glendale City Council on Tuesday on the campus, overturning a decision made by the Planning Commission in January.
Before the school can move ahead with building plans, a City Planning Hearing Officer must approve a parking reduction permit for the school campus. Proposed design plans add two parking spaces to the existing 59-space lot. But according to building codes, the gymnasium would require a 147-space lot.
Roger Kiesel, a city Senior Planner familiar with the gymnasium project, would not speculate on whether or not the permit would be approved.

The Chamlian School has been granted several parking reduction permits in the past, and is currently operating with one.
Rodney Khan, Chamlian’s consultant for the project, said that the school’s outdoor asphalt playground could be used as an overflow lot during special events that would see more cars, such as back-to-school nights or cultural nights. The playground can accommodate about 100 vehicles.

The parking reduction permit will be up for review in July or August, said Kiesel. After that, gymnasium design plans will go toward the city’s Design Review Board.
Vazken Madenlian, Chamlian’s principal, said that the school will begin fundraising efforts for the gymnasium.
Chamlian has a student population of 500 and about 63 full and part-time faculty members.
