Girl Scouts to Celebrate Centennial Anniversary With Fashion Show

The girls will model historic uniforms.

By Brenda Cusick

The Moorpark Girl Scouts will hold a vintage fashion show Saturday to celebrate 100 years of Girl Scouting. Girl Scouts and their mothers will model uniforms spanning the 100 years.

Uniforms from the earliest days had metal buttons with the Girl Scout insignia. Later, during the 1940s those buttons were replaced with plastic ones, as the metal was needed for the war effort. The 1950s brought along very fashionable uniforms for both leaders and the girls. In the 1970's, bell bottom pants and polyester were in vogue.

Uniforms for the girls include marineer (sailor) uniforms from Monterey, Catalina and Ventura. There are camping uniforms complete with utility belts and loads of great camping accessories.

Modern uniforms are more streamlined and bring back nostalgic memories of being a Brownie and Junior.Ā

A luncheon is also available along with a silent auction, with proceeds to benefit the Friends of the Library. The Library is also 100 years old this year. Our Moorpark library was started by the Women's Fortnightly Club.

The show takes place at 11 a.m. at the historic High Street Arts Center, 45 E. High St. Tickets are only $5 ahead of time and are available at the Library's front desk.
