Here are five facts to start your Friday.

  1. Today is National Arbor Day and Moorpark is celebrating with an event at Veterans Memorial Park. The city will plant a tree and give trees away that attendees can take home and plant. The event runs from 4 to 5 p.m. and the park is at Spring and Flinn roads (across the street from the Police Services Building).
  2. Arbor Day originated in Nebraska in April 1872. According to arbor-day.net, it was the brainchild of journalist and politician Julius Sterling Morton, who worked to improve agricultural techniques. He later served as President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of Agriculture.
  3. When legislatures adopted the redwood as California's official state tree in 1937, it did not name a particular species but simply referred to "the native redwood," according to NetState.com. In 1951, the state's attorney general ruled that both native species qualified as the official state tree. Two years later, the California legislature passed an amendment to the original bill recognizing both the Sequoia sempervirens and the Sequoia gigantea as official state trees.
  4. Ā The National Weather Service is predicting a high near 71 degrees and aĀ low near 51 degrees.
