What does it mean to be an immigrant? An immigrant mother? An immigrant mother’s son?

10 performers will take the stage at the Mountain View Center for Performing Arts, September 23rd and 24th to follow the journey of a young Chinese mother's immigration to America and her tender and compelling relationship with her son as she watches him navigate the pitfalls of growing up within this challenging duality. Through a series of vignettes, this production tells the story of a Chinese-American’s struggle for identity by investigating the “zero hours” in life: the choices and dilemmas we face in love, in career, in our value systems, and in our ever-changing relationships with our families.

Artistic Director Philein Wang blends poetry, photography, painting, and live percussion with her unique motion style, Tiger Hip Hop™. Tiger Hip Hop™ is a dynamic fusion of modern dance, hip hop, Shaolin-style martial arts, Wushu, and Tai Chi. Together they depict the joys, sorrows and frustrations that come with cultural assimilation.

In its second home season, this fall’s production brings exciting new choreography, new original musical compositions and a partnership with two celebrated international artists, Sunny Shen acclaimed modern dancer from Beijing and Jorge Ihle, Hollywood theatrical director originally from Germany.  Also joining us are guest performances from young up-incoming local Taiwanese-American vocal artists, the Ritards.

Everyone who enjoys theater, dance, and live music is encouraged to attend.

About Philein/ZiRu Productions:

Philein/ZiRu Productions was founded in 2007 and, since that time, has distinguished itself as an organization that focuses on multi-disciplinary work, collaboration across cultural boundaries, and actively addressing the question of cultural identity.  It is a non-profit dance production company (fiscally sponsored by Dancers’ Group) based in the Peninsula/South Bay Area with a mission to create an artistic base for the Chinese-American diaspora. It produces local and international shows using collaboration as a means to build a cross-cultural bridge between the United States and the Greater China region (China, Taiwan and Hong Kong).  Philein/Ziru Productions have produced a total of seven tours and exchanges between the United States and China. The company's centerpiece is Wang's own dance form, Tiger Hip Hop™/Tiger Motion, which is a highly stylized fusion of modern/ballet, Tai Chi, Wushu, Shaolin Style Tiger Claw, yoga, and hip hop that, in itself highlights the intensely diverse cultural influences in the company. The company also provides free master dance classes for colleges and underprivileged youths to share with us the freedom and joy which comes from the blending of multi-disciplinary arts.
