Failed Gasket Possible Reason For Gas Leak In Mountain View

The incident was Sunday near St. Joseph's Church.

PG&E stopped a gas leak in Mountain View earlier Sunday that started when some equipment failed, a company spokeswoman said.

PG&E received word of a gas odor at 1:03 p.m. and responded to the area around St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church at 582 Church Street, spokeswoman Jacqueline Ratto said. The company used gas leak detection equipment to locate the leak, which was caused at least in part by the failure of a rubber gasket, Ratto said.

PG&E officials are investigating why the gasket failed. Ratto said PG&E crews stopped the leak and made the area safe at 3:10 p.m. and people were allowed back into the church, which had been evacuated, and along Church street, which was closed between Hope and Castro streets during the investigation.
