Silicon Valley's 'Tour de Cure' Was American Diabetes' No. 3 Cycling Fundraiser In U.S.

The American Diabetes Association announced the results from a successful Tour de Cure® in 2014 -- and Silicon Valley was the third biggest earner raising more that $1 million in donations during the June event.

The cycling event had more than 61,000 cyclists participating in 86 cities throughout the country, raising a total of $27 million to help fight diabetes. All the funds that were raised at the Tour de Cure events will go to support the Association’s mission -- to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

The Association would like to recognize the top five performing markets in 2014 which included:

• Napa Valley, CA which raised a total of $1,406,878
• Saratoga Springs, NY which raised a total of $1,307,100
• Silicon Valley, CA which raised a total of $1,029,654
• Rochester, NY which raised a total of $1,008,340
• Denver, CO which raised a total of $997,064

In addition, the following individuals were the top five performing individual fundraisers for the year:

• Mr. Jim Hallett of Indianapolis, IN, raised $113,188
• Mr. W.D.B. of Brigham City, UT raised $50,000
• Mr. Ray R. Mccutcheon of Selma, TX raised $46,083
• Mr. Steve Menzies of Fort Worth, TX raised $41,455
• Mr. H. David Sloan of Selma, TX raised $41,031

“With nearly 30 million people living with diabetes in the U.S. and another 86 million with prediabetes, putting them at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, diabetes is taking a toll on the country,” said Greg Elfers, Chief Field Development Officer, American Diabetes Association. “The American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure helps change the future of diabetes. Individuals and teams composed of co-workers, family and friends take the ride of their life to help raise critical funds to Stop Diabetes.”

Tour de Cure is designed for everyone from the occasional bike rider to the experienced cyclist with routes ranging from 5-mile family rides to 100-mile “century” rides and more.

Routes vary by location and events feature rest stops with great food to fuel the journey, volunteers to cheer riders on and any mechanical support needed along the way.
