WINCHESTER, CA — Details about a 3,600-gallon sewage spill and subsequent road closure Tuesday in Winchester were released by the California Highway Patrol.

The hazmat spill happened just before 7 a.m. when a 2016 Freightliner sewage tanker truck driven by a 28-year-old Aguanga man overturned on Scott Road, just east of Leon Road, according to the CHP.

For reasons still under investigation, the driver drifted off the roadway, causing the rig to overturn and the tanker to split open. The crash led to approximately 3,600 gallons of raw sewage spilling onto the road and dirt shoulder area, the CHP reported.
