Murrieta House Fire Sparked By Vehicle, Fire Officials Say: PHOTOS, VIDEO

Fire officials said two elderly residents were displaced in the fire.

MURRIETA, CA — A house fire in Murrieta blackened the two-story structure and sent smoke through the region Monday afternoon. The home was at one time fully engulfed on Via Cadiz, which is just east of Los Alamos Road and Interstate 215 and down the street from Rail Ranch Elementary School.

"Murrieta PD is assisting Murrieta Fire & Rescue with a structure fire on Via Cadiz," police said at 2:12 p.m.
"Traffic in the area will be affected. Please allow extra time for school pick up. (Whitewood / Los Alamos area)."

Patch arrived on scene a short time later, to find all five of the Murrieta Fire and Rescue Department's engines at the location. The flames had spread from the home's garage and up to the second story.

Murrieta Fire & Rescue Deputy Fire Chief David Lanzter says the call initially came in as a vehicle fire in the garage.

"When our units responded, the fire was fully involved in the garage and was spreading up into the upper story," he said.

A man who lives at the home was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but declined transport to the hospital, according to Lanzter. No other injuries were reported.

Witnesses told Patch that the man tried to run back into the house as ammunition was stored in the garage. However, that report was still under investigation as of Monday afternoon.

The home was red-tagged following the fire, displacing the man and his wife, Patch was told.
