Murrieta Firefighters Fundraise For Cancer Research In Honor Of One Of Their Own

MURRIETA, CA — Murrieta firefighters will host a local fundraiser this month to support blood cancer research and honor a team member in the midst of his cancer fight, the Murrieta Fire & Rescue shared in a recent news release.

On January 23, beginning at 9 a.m., firefighters will be at the intersection in front of the Albertsons Shopping Center on Cal Oaks Road, raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

"The fundraiser will begin with a brief ceremony at 9 a.m., where firefighters will share information about the cause, the upcoming Firefighter Stairclimb, and why this effort matters," the release says. "Community members are invited to stop by, learn more about the cause, and show their support. All donations collected during the event go directly to blood cancer research and patient services.

"Throughout the day, firefighters will take turns using a stair-climbing machine while wearing full protective gear.

This live demonstration, often called “climbing for a cure,” shows just how physically demanding the event is and helps explain why firefighters train so hard for it, according to Murrieta Fire Chief Bernie Molloy in the recent release. This year’s fundraiser continues to honor Murrieta Fire Captain Shad Chanley, who was also honored by Murrieta firefighters last year and continues to bravely battle cancer.

"The team is proud to climb as Team Chanley and draw attention to the real people behind the cause," they said. They are seeking additional support as Murrieta Firefighters prepare to travel to Seattle in March 2026 to climb the 69 floors of the Columbia Center in full gear, according to the statement. "Community support is essential to the success of this fundraiser, and everyone is encouraged to stop by and help make a difference close to home."
