Murrieta Woman ID'd In Deadly Wreck, Community Rallies To Help

The woman died at the hospital following a terrible collision in town last week.

MURRIETA, CA — Donna Montes had a heart for serving people, her loved ones say. But on Thursday, Donna's efforts were cut short, as she lost her life in a major traffic crash in Murrieta when she was rear-ended, police and coroner's officials report. She was 52.

Murrieta Police Sgt. Sandra O'Donnell says the woman was initially taken to a local hospital serious condition. She was later airlifted to another hospital where she passed away the same day.

"Montes was transported to Inland Valley Medical Center and then transferred to Loma Linda University Medical Center," the San Bernardino County coroner's office reports. "Despite medical intervention, her death was pronounced at 4:33 p.m."

According to O'Donnell, Montes was rear-ended in the wreck at Hancock Avenue and Ridgewood Road around 8:49 a.m. Thursday. Though the crash is still under investigation, speed is believed to have played a role, she told Patch.

Since Montes' untimely passing, the Murrieta Valley community has rallied together to help raise funds for her family.

"She was a sweet and caring woman who was loved by everyone who knew her," a crowdfunding campaign started by Jamie Stark on YouCaring states. "She was employed at Calvary Chapel Murrieta and worked with the Children's ministry. She had a heart for serving people."

As of Monday, more than $5,000 had been raised for the Montes family. A goal of $10,000 was established.

"Her husband, family and friends were obviously surprised by this tragedy," Stark said. "And all support raised will go towards her medical bills and memorial costs."

Meanwhile, a roadside memorial has popped up at the scene of the tragic crash. People have left signs, flowers and notes in memory of Montes at the location.

Police have yet to say if the driver of the other vehicle will face charges. That person, who has not been identified suffered minor injuries in the crash, according to fire officials.
