Officer Involved Shooting Reported in Hemet

"As the officer attempted to take the subject into custody, an officer-involved shooting occurred."

HEMET, CA - A Hemet police officer fired his weapon Thursday while arresting a man who tried to flee from him in a mobile home park, but no one was injured.

The officer-involved shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. in the 1400 block of West Florida Avenue, near Lyon Avenue, according to Hemet police Lt. Eddie Pust.

He said that residents of the mobile home park called 911 to complain about a vehicle parked in the middle of a right-of-way, and a patrol unit was sent to the location to investigate.

The lone patrolman located the sedan in the street, occupied by four people, according to Pust. When the officer tried to make contact with the suspects, two bailed out and ran, prompting the lawman to give chase, Pust said.

"As the officer searched the area, he located one subject hiding to the rear of a mobile home," the lieutenant said. "As the officer attempted to take the subject into custody, an officer-involved shooting occurred. No one was struck or injured by gunfire as a result of this incident."

The suspect was taken into custody without further incident, and backup officers located the other man hiding in an adjacent trailer park, where he had attempted to break into a residence, Pust alleged.

Neither suspect was identified, nor was the officer who discharged his sidearm.

Detectives are still sorting out all of the details related to the encounter, according to Pust.
