Man Killed On HWY-29 By Peterbilt Semi Truck

A fatal crash, road closures, and signal failures were reported on HWY-29 on Tuesday.

NAPA VALLEY, CA — Traffic snarled and tensions mounted Tuesday as a fatal pedestrian crash forced the closure of a major corridor.

On Tuesday, a crash killed a pedestrian on southbound State Route 29 near Hoffman Lane, prompting authorities to shut down the highway and redirect drivers.

The California Highway Patrol said a 2012 Peterbilt semi-truck struck the pedestrian after the man stepped into the vehicle's path from the right shoulder. The driver tried to avoid the collision but could not stop in time, CHP said in a statement. Emergency responders pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.

Officials closed southbound SR-29 at Hoffman Lane and diverted traffic to Solano Avenue, creating delays through Yountville and surrounding areas.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The identity of the deceased has not been released by the Napa County Coroner’s Office. The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate and anyone with information should contact the office.

Hours earlier on Wednesday morning, a separate failure was reported at a railroad crossing, forcing officials to shut down westbound Madison Avenue at Washington Street, according to authorities.

The malfunction locked the traffic signal at SR-29 in a constant green phase for highway traffic, potentially preventing cross traffic from moving safely.

Crews from Yountville Public Works, Caltrans, and the Napa Valley Wine Train worked to fix the issue, while city officials warned drivers to expect delays and use alternate routes.
