Newark Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Drugs For Sale Outside Convenience Store

The incident was Friday night on Thornton Avenue.

NEWARK, CA - Police arrested an 18-year-old man Friday night in Newark after an officer found the man to be in possession of multiple drugs.

At 9:43 p.m., an officer was walking to a 7-Eleven store at 7288 Thornton Ave., when he noticed a man sitting in a vehicle without a license plate, according to Cmdr. Mike Carroll.

As the officer got closer, he smelled marijuana coming from the car. The driver initially refused to pull down his window to speak with the officer, Carroll said.

When the man finally did speak with the officer, he admitted to having marijuana inside the car.

A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine and cash, according to Carroll.

Police arrested the driver, identified as Newark resident Pedro Mota, on suspicion of possession of drugs for sale, possession of controlled substances and transportation of controlled substances, Carroll said.

Mota was booked into the Santa Rita Jail and his vehicle was towed from the scene.
