Dear Newark USD Community,
During this last week April, I want to take the opportunity to thank you for your dedication and support of NUSD students. This month has been unprecedented but it has been your support and the work of our NUSD staff that has helped move us forward. Thank you. Here are some updates:

School Meals– Today we opened up our third distribution site to serve Newark families with meals. Every Monday and Wednesday, from 11 a.m.- 12 p.m., we will distribute multiple meals to families at the following sites:
Newark Jr. High- 6201 Lafayette Ave.
NUSD Central Kitchen- 37370 Birch Street
Schilling Elementary – 36901 Spruce Street
Distance Learning– Our teachers and principals continue to build on ensuring all students have access and are in communication with each student. If you have any questions, please reach out directly to your child’s teacher, principal or email us at [email protected]. Also visit our district website at www.newarkunified.org for updates. Our school principals and staff will continue to send out new information but do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.
Parent Workshops– Please join us at an upcoming workshop that focuses on supporting your child with distance learning. Workshops will take place virtually on April 30th and May 7th and we will have workshops in English at 9:00 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m. and in Spanish at 10:30 a.m. Please visit our website for more information.
Finally, I want to share with you where we are currently with some of our plans for the future. While we continue to focus on our current Distance Learning work, we also have to think about the near future. Our next major areas of work include: continuing to support the end of this school year; planning for the Summer of 2020; and for the Fall of 2020. I am forming district work groups, each led by members of the NUSD administrative team and working with our labor partners.
The Summer Planning Workgroup will develop modified versions of traditional summer programming (Special Education Extended School Year and high school credit recovery). We will bring this plan to the Board of Education in late May.
All across the State, school districts are working to make plans for what it might look like to open schools in the fall. As Governor Newsom has said, we will have to plan for different ways to bring our students back to school. Last week I attended a virtual meeting with all Alameda County Superintendents and together we reviewed some initial guidelines developed by the San Diego County Office of Education, which has developed an overview of the types of issues that districts should consider as they plan to reduce the number of students on campus, including hybrid classroom and online options.
I will keep you informed as these workgroups develop proposals. Thank you for your support as we continue to move forward. Please take care and stay safe.
In Community,
Leticia Salinas, Acting Superintendent
