Some breeds are more comfortable with people than others; some are downright cuddly.
Good chickens for small children include any of the Plymouth Rock Colors, Orpingtons, Delawares, and even Jersey Giants with proper supervision.
Careful older children might want bantams; they usually aren't the best egg layers, but most have engaging, friendly personalities.
Don't forget that any breed for the backyard needs to be quiet and calm. Noisy birds annoy the neighbors; and easily excited breeds may quit laying if upset.
