Teen Accidentally Shoots Self In Newark With Sawed-Off Rifle

Police were originally told that the teen was injured in a drive-by shooting.

NEWARK, CA — Newark Police received a report of a drive-by shooting at Mayhews Landing Park on Thursday, Sept. 21, at around 9:45 p.m. They found a 15-year-old who had been shot in the knee.

The victim told officers that it happened while the teen was playing basketball.

However, an investigation by police found that the teen and his friends had been playing around with a sawed-off .22 rifle in the garage of a home when the teen accidentally shot himself.
