Union City Woman Saved From Burning Car After Head-On Crash in Newark

Police believe the woman may have been speeding prior to the crash and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

A 55-year-old woman was saved from her burning car thanks to three police officers in Newark on Thursday evening. Around 6 p.m., officers responded to a report of a driver trapped in a car that crashed in the area of Cedar Boulevard and Cedar Court, southwest of Interstate Highway 880 and near NewPark Mall.

The gray, four-door Audi A4 had crashed head-on into a tree, according to police. An officer who arrived at the scene and found the front end of the car on fire located the unresponsive woman inside the driver’s seat, but was unable to remove her from the vehicle because she was wedged inside, police said.

Another officer who arrived to the scene used a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze, but it re-ignited, according to police. A third officer came to the scene and with the other two officers cut out the woman’s seatbelt and removed her from the vehicle, police said. The officers said the fire was “very intense” and could have exploded at any moment, police said. Firefighters from the Alameda County Fire Department responded to the scene and were able to put out the blaze, according to police.
