"(Christina and I) are getting through this by staying great friends and being the best parents possible," he told People in an exclusive interview. "Divorced couples who fight their whole lives really mess up their kids. We had a talk and said, 'We still want the kids to understand were a unit, we're still a family even if we're not together.'"

After filming the final episodes of "Flip or Flop" for HGTV, now in Season 7, the former couple appears to be making the most of the breakup.

Fans of the show have agonized with the Orange County couple's split, one saying: "This is even harder to accept than Brad and Angelina!"

Tarek El Moussa survived thyroid cancer and later discovered he also suffered from testicular cancer during treatment. Events leading up to the divorce included what the couple called a "misunderstanding" when Orange County Sheriff's Department responded to the El Moussas' Yorba Linda home after reports of someone running from the residence carrying a firearm.

The pair's personal lives are a testament to their ability to find broken properties and fix what can be fixed and let go of what cannot. They also are notorious for taking the ugly and outdated and transforming it into something beautiful.

Perhaps the pair can make their divorce a success, even while their marriage was not.

Tarek El Moussa, who moved out of the family's Yorba Linda home, now lives in Newport Beach.

They are splitting custody of the couple's children, daughter, Taylor and son, Brayden, "pretty much 50-50."

According to People, Tarek El Moussa says his new life in Newport Beach allows him to dedicate himself to being the best father possible.
