J. Grant Brittain Del Mar Skate Ranch Newspaper Launch, Photography Installation & Slide Show

Marcas Contemporary and Arkitip Inc. publications, announce with great pride an extraordinary collection of photographs by photographer J. Grant Brittain. The exhibited images have captured inspirational moments from the late 1970’s visually representing the infancy of skateboarding culture. In 1979, while working at the Del Mar Skateboard Ranch selling Cokes and Twinkies, Brittain borrowed his roommate’s Canon and began a 36 year-long journey with skateboarding, cameras and magazines. In 1983, Brittain contributed to the development of Transworld Skateboarding magazine and became the official photo editor for 20 years. He framed Transworld into a top selling skateboarding magazine and has captured iconic images of legendary skateboarders over the past three decades. Brittain has not only mentored other skate photographers but has highly influenced the growing industry of skateboarding photography. In 2003, Brittain founded The Skateboard Mag and it is where he currently resides within his career.

With the exhibition, there will be a release of 500 limited edition printed 11” x 17” newspapers featuring 48 pages of images curated by Grant from the Del Mar Ranch period. Few individuals find themselves central to such an active community – where one’s perspective is just a notch asked of the rest and where movement and progression is the norm. Grant Brittain’s body of work reflects his deep involvement in an emerging youth culture.

Grant will be present to sign copies of his newspaper with a slide presentation along with Q&A from 8pm to 9pm. The opening will occur Saturday, June 13th from 8pm to 11pm
